Beans are now making an appearance in cool, arid and temperate climates. There are low growing bush varieties, tall climbers, beans perfect to eat fresh or ones to dry and cook over winter. Whatever your choice, beans are easy to grow and require little fuss for maximum results. For those in tropical climates stick with Snake Beans – a tried and tested performer for your climate.
Cool climate gardeners – it’s time to get excited, the weather is warming up and you can nearly get those cold sensitive tomatoes and chillies into the ground. Malabar or Ceylon spinach as it is also known, can be planted in all climates this month, hailing from tropical Africa it is perfect for tropical climates and as long as its roots are kept moist, it will thrive in the hottest of southern dry summers – an excellent alternative to traditional spinach which can struggle in the heat of summer.
With so many vegetables to plant, make sure you leave some room for pollinating flowers, not only will they add beautiful colours to your garden, they will help attract beneficial insects – a win-win in anyone’s book.
