Are your seeds Heirloom or Organic varieties?

Although we stock mostly heirloom variety seeds, we do have a select range of organic and hybrid options. Each product is clearly marked labelled so you are aware of its information.

What are Heirloom Seeds?

Heirloom seeds are often considered to be developed or grown before the 1950’s. They are well adapted, flavoursome, hardy and have distinct characteristics. Heirloom seeds are open pollinated seeds that have been pollinated by either wind, insects, bees or even birds. They are genetically stable which means you can save the seeds for next season. If you are interested in the wonderful craft of ‘seed saving’, we recommend doing some research first as pairing similar varieties too close to each other might result in seed that is not expected, or true to type!

Here at Farmhouse Seeds we are extremely passionate about heirloom seeds, we believe in ‘seed freedom’, ensuring that we as everyday humans maintain as much seed diversity, food security and control as possible.

What are Hybrid or F1 seeds?

While we are passionate about Heirloom seeds we understand and appreciate the benefits of F1 seed and how they play an important part in the modern vegetable garden. F1 seeds, or commonly called ‘Hybrid’ seeds are the first generation of seed produced by the crossbreeding of specifically selected parent plants. This practice is used for higher yields, to reduce common diseases or for stronger, quicker growing plants. There is no chemical or genetic manipulation, just some great pollination and selection skills by experienced growers!  Hybrid versions are not recommended to be used to save seeds as the results can be extremely varied and often disappointing , however if you do wish to try your hand at seed saving, we have an extensive range of heirloom options available that are more suited to this.

Do you use any chemicals on your seeds?

We do NOT stock any treated seeds or add any chemicals to them.

Are your seeds GMO (genetically modified)?

Simply, we do NOT stock any GMO seeds. GMO seeds are strictly controlled in Australia and are currently only for use by licenced commercial growers.

What type of packaging do you use?

We take care of our planet by only using environmentally conscious packaging.  We use recycled paper and envelopes where possible, and do not use any plastic when packaging our seeds.  Our seeds are packaged in biodegradable cellophane which is derived from wood instead of oil.  Although it can not be recycled when finished, pop them in your compost or directly into your garden so they can safely return to the earth.   For more detailed information about our Environmental Statement and our Vision, please visit our Home Page.

Do your seed packets contain enough seeds for adequate growing?

Our packets have a generous quantity of seeds to allow successive planting. To help you with your planning, we have also included on the back of the packet, a grid to help you remember planting information and dates. (A Farmhouse Seeds idea that stemmed from our own experience for more record keeping).

How will I know when to plant my seeds?

Our seed packets indicate recommend sowing times for each climate zone across Australia. While this is a good guide, it should only be used as a guide. Depending where you live, your micro-climate may allow for a month or two leeway on either side of our recommendations. Look for local gardening groups or even an older neighbour that can be a great source of information on local planting times.

How long will my new seeds last?

Our seeds are viable at the time of sale and although the life span of seeds vary, storage is the key to longevity.  We recommend a cool, dark environment away from moisture and often an air-tight container in a dark cupboard is sufficient. Although some seeds can last for years in the right environment without any or very little impact on germination rates, we recommend using seeds within that season to provide the best germination rates possible.
