This classic heirloom climbing bean produces long and very flavoursome sweet pods. With good pollination runner beans are very heavy cropping. Dark green leaves and vibrant red flowers make for an extremely attractive addition to any vegetable garden.
For cooking fresh, harvest when pods are approx 15-18cm long and before a true plump seed begins to develop.
Runner beans will grow tall so supporting with a trellis or similar will be needed. Regular watering, well composted soil and regular picking will have you harvesting for a long period. During the height of summer when temperatures are extreme, morning sun or even part shade can be advantageous as the bright red flowers can drop in hot conditions.
Scarlet Emperor Runner beans will often grow as a perennial and are also known as ‘Seven Year Beans’.
